App Advice | VoiceOver Review

Four stars out of five.

App Name: App Advice
Developer: AppAdvice.com
Version: 1.4.2

Using iPhone 3Gs, version 5.01

Pros:

  • Fluid navigation through a majority of the application with VoiceOver.
  • Buttons and their labels are evident enough to understand which section Is presented and navigation is easiest when using the single finger swipe left and right gestures.
  • Many new applications have been found, used, and enjoyed through App Advice’s articles and updates.

Cons:

  • Some elements of navigation can be confusing at times. When cycling through all available buttons, a few are only labeled as “button” along the top section of the app. These essentially take you back to the main selection panel.
  • When an article is presented, VoiceOver will begin reading when touched. Logical enough, until trying to move down to select other text does nothing. VoiceOver instead treats the entire article as one body of a unified text block. Getting around this issue as mentioned above, use the single finger swipe left and right gestures to break down and read the article at your pace.
  • Selecting an app typically presents its own page and content. However, the page itself sometimes appears “stuck” if attempting to swipe up to view more of the page. To solve this issue, swipe left using the three finger gesture to  squash this bug.

Breakdown:

Despite not being as polished or a seamless experience with VoiceOver, navigation is reliable and all elements of the app are within reach. There is a lot of work clearly demonstrated in its content, so the VoiceOver nuances and gripes can be easily overlooked. Fortunately at the time this review was released, App Advice was offering their app for free for a limited time. Normally the cost was $2.99 but well worth it.

Fox News | VoiceOver Review

One star rating out of five

App Name: Fox News
Developer: Fox News Digital
Version: 1.2.2

Originally Reviewed: October 17, 2011

Using iPhone 3Gs, version 5.01

Pros:

  • Unfortunately, I cannot find anything good within this app due to the main viewing panel is completely inaccessible with VoiceOver.

Cons:

  • See above.

Breakdown:

Depressingly so with most news applications currently available, the interface is built with no consideration or possible existence of VoiceOver. Sadly this leads to limited access to news/information in general. True, that there are endless choices – but if most are not compatible with adaptive technology then they cannot be considered as an option.

Google Search | VoiceOver Review (updated to version 0.9.0.7005)

Two stars out of five.App Nae: Google Search

Developer: Google
Version:  0.9.0.7005
Using iPhone 3Gs, version 4.3.5
Revised Review: September 14, 2011

Noticeable Changes:

  • What appears to be an easier interface this time around, though limited in usability.
  • Most bugs found in the prior version are eliminated through the new user interface.
  • Using the single finger swipe right gesture past the text field on both search screens, a button labeled “corpus search” is announced. This is the drop down menu when selected for using different modes of search.
  • Ideally Google Search seems best with headphones which include a built-in microphone for use with VoiceOver.

Possible Improvements Needed:

  • Again. and unfortunately, the volume is forced way down for microphone sensitivity but makes hearing VoiceOver very difficult near impossible without headphones.
  • One crippling flaw which remains is the error message displayed when unable to interpret a voice search freezes the app. Though not literally frozen, the message box itself is completely unreadable with VoiceOver only stating it as “button”. The resolution to this issue requires either vision to see the buttons and turn off Voiceover or close and restart the app.

Reassessment: Only one additional star is given with the version update. There is still not enough improvement to recommend using this app over Microsoft’s Bing. In limited circumstances, the voice search and text only searches would be worthwhile. The only continuously reliable method of use would be text only. Google Gogles was not bothered with due to the poor experience.

Original Review: July 10, 2011

Pros:

  • Once “simply talk” is enabled within the settings, voice search appears within reach, sort of.
  • Google Goggles, which I thought might be worthless to VoiceOver, was possibly the most accessible element in the entire application.

Cons:

  • Navigation throughout this application is nearly impossible with VoiceOver enabled. After some groping around the main screen, I found using the single finger left and right gestures more useful.
  • If a voice search is not recognized, the error message appears – but is not accessible. VoiceOver only identifies the entire box and commands as “button”. So either switching out of the application, or shutting off VoiceOver and pressing one of the buttons (requiring vision) will fix this dead end.
  • Once a search is done, one might think to go into the textbox to see related searches. Not so easy. The mess that is presented is a label “button” which was the original search, followed by “GMA icon builder” labels which are the related terms for the original search. Double tap anywhere on these labels to go back to the search results page.
  • Google Goggles seems to work with VoiceOver smoothly compared with the rest of the app, however, randomly crashes with VoiceOver when attempting to double tap to focus on an object.
  • Finally, the volume is turned way down for microphone sensitivity, but makes VoiceOver inaudible unless using headphones.

Breakdown: On par with anything Google and accessibility, it is thought of last if at all. I really thought I would get a lot out of this application than what was actually presented. I will be deleting this joke and using Bing from now on.

Ariadne GPS | VoiceOver Review (updated to version 1.1)

Four stars out of five.

App Name: Ariadne GPS
Developer: Giovanni Ciaffoni
Version: 1.1

Using iPhone 3Gs, version 4.3.5
Revised Review: September 12, 2011

Noticeable Changes:

  • Faster, more accurate, and improved response in “monitor” mode using both Edge/3G networks.
  • Fixed hiccups with location alerts. Locations are alerted even when app is placed in the background.
  • Depiction of Google Maps view is marked in VoiceOver as “map”, instead of being unannounced.
  • The ability to delete favorites now exists.

Possible Improvements Needed:

  • Ariadne GPS still does not give real-time feedback when in “monitor” mode and placed in the background.

Reassessment: Ariadne GPS version 1.1 addressed most bugs found in the first release. The improvements in stability and reliability, almost push my former constant use of the Sendero GPS app to a minimum.

Listen to the recommended podcast: Cory Martin’s demonstration of Ariadne GPS.

Original Review: July 3, 2011

Pros:

  • This is one of the most innovative GPS applications I have come across. First discovered buried within the “App Lists” section of App Advice, a category dedicated to visually impaired and blind applications. Needless to say I was very excited to give it a try after reading the review. One of the first things I noticed when interacting with (VoiceOver) in the application, is the variety of ways to use it. While it gives the impression of information overload at first, playing around with the different modes presents several different ways of using this app.
  • Pressing the “Where am I” button, gives a static readout of your present location.
  • Pressing the “Look Around” button flips over to a full screen map, where nearby streets and their corresponding numbers are presented. Admittedly, this is a little confusing at first relying solely on VoiceOver. However, with all accessibility options within the application turned on. Map navigation becomes easier to understand.
  • Through some pretty extensive personal testing using the “Start Monitor” function, i.e. commuting on downtown busses, highway travel, suburban driving, walking, the most ideal use of this GPS application falls into more urban settings.
  • The experiences in downtown commuting on busses were pretty impressive. Each intersection crossed was fairly reliable in being announced accurately. There were some latency issues when turning into new intersections, and some street names were skipped completely in being announced. However, periodically checking the street name yourself resolves this issue.
  • While walking as the GPS application is in “monitor” mode, results in a similar experience as bus commuting. There are some latency issues with turning on to new streets, and the next street can be announced far in advance of actually approaching the intersection. These conditions were experienced with the “query interval” set at the default “10 seconds”. Changing the interval time could completely alter the experience of walking and using the GPS app.

Cons:

  • Suburban driving and highway driving unfortunately had similar results. Even with the “query interval” set at “5 seconds”, the actual travel of the vehicle/bus was too fast for the GPS application to keep pace.
  • Perhaps naively, I expected the options for this GPS application to be within the program itself. Instead, all of the preferences were located within the settings control panel of the iPhone. Surprisingly and disappointing, most accessibility oriented options as “vibrate on street” were turned off by default.
  • There are still some head scratching elements to be fully explored to be explained. For instance what does “Cardinal Point” and “Compass instead of Course” mean? How does this impact the performance of the application? No description is provided.
  • There is no way, or at least I have not yet found it, to delete added favorites from the list.
  • Announcement of street block numbers seemed new and cool at first (using VoiceOver), but soon became repetitive. Unless you’re specifically searching for an address in real-time, this feature seems sort of useless if constantly turned on.
  • On the main navigation page, the top third portion is of a satellite picture of your current location using Google Maps. This is pretty neat, but I would have never known what was there without my wife looking at it to point it out, as VoiceOver indicates nothing is there.
  • Putting the application into the background disables the monitoring function if turned on.
  • Battery drain, as with all GPS applications, is the challenge with such a convenience. In my experience of walking one complete block, my battery went from a starting 98 percent to 86 percent.

Breakdown: Some may find the rough edges of the interface and lack of supporting documentation intimidating. For those willing to tinker and explore with VoiceOver will overcome these issues.  There are a lot of settings and variables to play with here, so no shortage of varying degrees of accuracy or results with this GPS application.  While there is much more to be said, the price of $2.99 cannot be beat for what is gained for someone visually impaired or blind. The possibility of using this GPS application together with Navigon or Tomtom may open new doors in exceptional accessibility and independence.

NatureSpace | VoiceOver Review

Four stars out of five.

App Name: NatureSpace
Developer: Holographic Audio Theater
Version: 2.5

Using iPhone 3Gs, version 4.3.4
Originally Reviewed: July 16, 2011

Pros:

  • These are incredible soundscape environments created by the publisher. Navigation throughout the application is easy enough, using single finger swipe left and right gestures. No significant gaps or dead ends.
  • There are two distinct versions of each audio track on the player. One labeled “headphones small button” and “earbuds small button” The icon that is displayed indicates which track is currently playing. Switching between these modes displays a short fade in message stating “Earbud Optimization Enabled or “Disabled”. The difference between earbud “optimization” on or off is spectrum and frequency (hrz) of sound.

Cons:

  • While the menu on the main panel is stable with VoiceOver, navigation in the NatureSpace Store is a journey of itself. At first the buttons work normally, however, when swiping down to access more menu options the labels disappear. All that remains are a list of “button” labels. Using the single finger left and right swipe gestures fixes this issue.
  • While making a track selection in the NatureSpace Store, the price and name are labeled. Tapping on this results in no response. Instead, there are two buttons directly below labeled, well, “button” which point to the same location which is description, reviews, and option to purchase the track.

Breakdown: An essential app for those who commute using public transportation. Although there are a few flukes in getting around, the utility and overwhelming amount of selection overrides these small gripes.

Price Check by Amazon | VoiceOver Review

Five star rating out of five stars.

Developer:  Amzn Mobile LLC
Version: 1.1.0

Using iPhone 3Gs, version 4.3.3
Originally Reviewed: June 29, 2011

Pros:

  • Very useful application once all of the functions are explored. There are three primary buttons, labeled in VoiceOver as “b t n home scan on” which is a barcode scanner, “b t n home snap on” the camera/image capture function, and “b t n home say on” the voice search function. Additionally, “i c n gear” is the settings button, and “counting cart icon empty” is the shopping cart.
  • Each prior search is automatically saved and presented on the main screen.

Cons:

  • While the labels are slightly awkward, it does not seem to severely effect navigation of the application.

Breakdown: I was unsure of what to expect when first launching this application. With the odd button labels, I was ready to discard it without really giving it a chance. Fortunately and surprisingly the navigation is pretty direct and easy to use.

Netflix | VoiceOver Review

One star rating out of five

App Name: Netflix
Developer: Netflix Inc.
Version: 1.3

Using iPhone 3Gs, version 4.3.3
Originally Reviewed: June 28, 2011

Pros:.

  • It is possible to successfully search and find what you’re looking for, but in a very limited capacity. Using the “search” button and  typing shows relevant titles. The selection then made, playing content is straightforward.
  • The “resume” button located on the top-left corner, allows the content last played to continue where it last stopped.

Cons:

  • Unfortunately the rest of this application is essentially useless. When used normally, a flick of the finger would successfully navigate down through the movie selections. However, in VoiceOver you’re pretty stuck. This navigation panel is frozen in place, and no VoiceOver gesture gets results. One pathetic workaround, if you have some vision, is to constantly turn off and on VoiceOver while navigating down the selections.

Breakdown: Akin to the BBC News app review, this application is useful only to the extent of its few easily accessible buttons. No real consideration of VoiceOver at all.

AP Mobile | VoiceOver Review

App Name: AP Mobile (free)
Developer: The Associated Press
Version: 4.4
Using iPhone 3Gs, version 4.3.3
Original Review Date: June 22, 2011

Pros:

  • Easy one touch reading (of the entire article), for most of the stories presented using VoiceOver.
  • Navigation through the app itself is straightforward and clean.
  • Video section does work with VoiceOver, describing each video after getting past the indistinguishable “button” announcements, which are thumbnails of the videos.

Cons:

  • Photos section is completely inaccessible, announcing “button” followed by only “close” when proceeding to the picture. No descriptions of pictures provided.
  • Weather section is somewhat accessible, having the same “button” announcement issue in the first row, along with endless rows of data announced afterwards. This is hard to follow. However, the current day’s outlook does work.

Breakdown: The AP Mobile app is pretty solid. Despite the minor issues which I personally did not pay much attention to, this one is worth having in your collection.

Sleep Machine | VoiceOver Review

Rated three stars out of five.

App Name: Sleep Machine
Developer: SleepSoft LLC
Version: 3.1
Using iPhone 3Gs, version 4.3.3

Pros:

  • Surprisingly very accessible, with VoiceOver,  compared with other ambient sound environment apps.
  • Mostly quick and plain navigation.

Cons:

  • One button announced as “clock button main off” located at the top center, can cause some confusion and frustration. When tapped on, the screen changes over to an alarm clock function. That’s fine, until the controls fade quickly and you’re left stuck until tapping twice on the screen. From there, the controls will be revealed again and tapping a button labeled “alarm off” in the upper far left corner, will display the alarm clock settings.  In the bottom far-left corner is a button named “back”. This will return you to the main navigation. Choosing the far-right button, as in a bad Choose Your Own Adventure Book, will lead you to a completely inaccessible section. The only escape from this area, is a small button in the upper far-left corner labeled “back black”.
  • Finding the current sound being played on the main screen can be stubborn. Often announced as “sound select” until directly under the words.

Breakdown: These few issues may appear to be deal breakers. However, the usefulness of this app outlives its minor flaws.

Voice Brief | VoiceOver Review

Voice Brief achieved four stars out of five.

Developer: Dong Hyun Baik
Version: 1.51
Using iPhone 3Gs, version 4.3.3
Originally Reviewed: June 19. 2011

Pros:

  • Easy setup and control.
  • Great for commuting, hands-free listening,
  • Facebook and Twitter feeds integration is a plus.
  • Variance in voices makes listening to news, weather, etc., actually interesting.
  • Speech start/stop and previous/next functions work on earbud  controls.

Cons:

  • One small bug with VoiceOver on. You cannot access the Settings button until turning off VoiceOver and pulling down with a four finger gesture swipe to have the menu pull down from the top of the page.
  • Browsing into the highlighted article is not possible with VoiceOver active. Only by turning VoiceOver off, horizontally swiping on the article (which requires a bit of vision to see), would then bring up the full article.
  • Some longer article descriptions or content gets suddenly cut off, jumping to the next headline. This could merely be hitting an RSS character limit rather than an actual bug.

Breakdown: This app is surprisingly functional with VoiceOver. One would think having another speech synthesizer take over for reading content would not work, but it does. If you are willing to deal with some relatively minor bugs, extended use of this app is worth it.
