Gradients of Sightwas initiated in 2005 after my final eye operation in July 2004.  The decision to perform a trabeculectomy was made to address the rising glaucoma problem of IOP. This placed me in a situation where I had no functional vision for a second time in four years. For nearly two months, restoration to “normal” vision (the acuity I had just adapted to) was painstakingly slow. When my sight returned to a comfortable level to continue website development, I noticed that resources for the blind and visually impaired appeared disjointed and scattered. So I began to build lists of resources on my own; always asking the question, “What would someone recently in my situation be looking for?”  Gathering content what I thought useful and interesting through exploration, and also learned from others, were put in to one place. As life continued however the project became stale and in some cases the information obsolete.

In December 2010, I finally transitioned into the 21st century by obtaining an iPhone 3GS. The capabilities of VoiceOver to me was astounding. No longer having to manually install screen reader software onto my old smartphone, a Nokia 6650, wondering of its effectiveness before requiring another reinstallation.  Once I began experimenting with various applications with VoiceOver and quickly noticing that not all were compatible, I was inspired to begin reviewing applications for iOS. While VoiceOver is not the entire intent of this website, the current focus is to deliver concise, accurate, and useful information to other iPhone and iOS device users.

What’s this? Throughout my years of college during academic breaks, I would volunteer at my local elementary school. Primarily reading with kids K-5, this work would involve basic reading skills and English comprehension. The small books “All about Vince” and “All about Dave” were inspired by a 5th grade ESL teacher, as an assignment for the children to white a paragraph about a recent presentation about Vince my guide dog.
